Congratulations Chris! Your lame attempt at snarkiness managed to impress one bad blogger who regularly makes lame attempts at snarkiness! You're the man, Chris! Keep up the good work! Maybe someday YOU can be a bad blogger, too! Keep hope alive!

I agree the "God Hates Techno" design is indicative of the larger problems looming over at Threadless. They are making money-first decisions. I think Threadless may not last much longer as an independent business. They will be sold off, artwork and all, to a much larger company that has the cash to be able to exploit their properties.

Tonei, I understand what you're saying, but in my opinion, a designer could do a lot better than getting $2,300 + a few extra bucks off of line extensions from Threadless. Mind you, I think getting feedback from other artists about one's designs and artwork can be valuable, BUT you could do the same thing on Flickr.com by joining any one of the design and illustration groups.

Keep control over your copyrights! They truly are the most valuable thing you can own as a designer, especially if you are creating the artwork for yourself. Make YOU your first priority of business and make sure you'll have something to "repurpose" down the line. When you give up everything for a quick buck, you are stealing from your own future, and cutting off a very important part of your ability to make your career pay off.

I agree with the assertion that designers are getting screwed. However, I think one thing that has to be considered - what's the chance that a brand-new unpublished designer would get anywhere close to the circulation they get from having a shirt published on Threadless? I think the key is using Threadless as a starting point - not a final destination.

It's clear that the model Threadless established didn't take into account artists becoming more informed on exactly what a raw deal they've been getting. There's just no other way to cut this folks.

Here's a simple homework assignment: Go look up how much an average artist/designer would be paid for spot illustrations for apparel/t-shirts in the Graphic Artists Guild handbook. Now, look up what the going rates are for posters. Now imagine every artist getting this information into their hands and realizing that without their slavish work, Threadless is nothing. NOTHING.

Kids, reconsider your decision to hand over all of those very important copyrights to Threadless. These designs could be your livelihood. I'd sooner market my own work and make the money. Just look up what "Glennz" (Glenn Jones) has been doing recently. I'll give you a clue. He couldn't make a living on Threadless, so now he's selling his own line of shirts. Smart man.

Jeffrey, who cares about the fulfillment? That has zero effect on the quality or consumer desirability of the product available. Of greater concern is the that the folks who started Threadless have already basically "moved on" and in their place the bean counters have been installed. Decisions that used to be responsive to the community at large will now be settled by "does it make us money"? I anticipate the sale of Threadless and it's catalog of designs to a major chain (possibly Target or Urban Outfitters) within the space of a year. Mark my words. Business people make "business" decisions. Good luck with "Naked & Angry" and your wallpaper thing, two not very strong ideas.

I was very pleased to stumble upon this entry. My little brother had cancer for seven years and I don't think most people realize that there is a way that they can save someone's life. The $52 fee is merely a portion of the cost it takes to test and they are just attempting to offset their own costs a bit. I am already a member : ]

Johnny is right, $500 is WAY too low. 200 bags at $150 per bag (yes, $150) is $30,000. The artist gets a measly $500 out of $30,000??? Obviously not all $30,000 is profit, but I bet the people sewing those bags together ride the bus to work. Timbuk2 is making a fat profit from those bags, the artist gets $500, and Threadless gets ....??? For doing what, exactly? I'm going to bet Threadless' cut amounts to 10 to 20 times the artist gets. Sadly, IT DOESN'T MATTER. The Threadless community will fawn all over the Threadless executives like they always do, and scoff at anyone who dares to question their benevolence. Meanwhile the Threadless execs will post pictures on Flickr of the custom mansions they're building.

Threadless' contribution amounts to brokering the deal between the artist and Timbuk2 -- brokering a BAD deal. They also provide advertising and a built-in market, but the artist whose creativity the market is buying doesn't profit from that, Threadless and Timbuk2 do. Tom Burns has already asked if he could exclude his designs from being used for paper prints because he could instantly see what a poor deal it would be for him to have Threadless sell prints of his designs, and it won't be long before other artists see the same writing on the wall.
