El Diablo (Submission, Verdict: 4)

El Diablo
Rarely do I see a shirt that has this much detail without the inane use of halftones or dithers. This design is absolutely incredible, and yet it’s still lacking a certain something that would make it print-worthy. Perhaps it’s placement alone, but then it may also be lacking the depth that gives it a reason to be on the tee-shirt (I added the table surface in the above image as a test).
Frenchpix has a number of good subs in the running, most of which show a lot of promise.

New Prints And Busyness

Garden Of Failure - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever

New prints on Monday? Of course. Keith Carter’s beautifully illustrated Garden Of Failure Select tee is definitely this week’s gem. (Despite some confusion about the title.)

A handful of other splendid winning designs, two reprints, and lots of new kids sizes also hit the shelves. I apologize for our recent slacking on the job… summer is soon coming to an end and busyness ensues. For now, happy shopping!

Welcome to Brazil (Submission, Verdict: 3)

Welcome to Brazil - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever Close, but no cigar.

I like the overall style and feel of the design except that it looks too much like a sticker slapped onto the shirt. As fatheed put it in the comments, the design ought to be “worked onto the shirt a bit better”.

A marginal score for now. If reworked with the suggestions taken into consideration, this Brazilian design has potential.

Belated Bree Birthday Buzz, Etc.

I was traveling the last two days and didn’t take the sliver of opportunity I had to wish Bree a happy birthday, so I’mma do that right now: Bree, happy birthday, and thanks so much for keeping our fledlging little blog afloat, even when I’ve fallen completely off the map.

Bree’s nearly overtaken me in total post counts here, and I’m sure that’ll happen pretty soon. Thanks again, Bree!

Birthday Faux Pas

Since nobody here had the chance to wish me a happy Birthday yesterday, I thought I’d wish myself a belated happy Birthday even at the risk of committing a faux pas.

Some other notable figures in history also happen to share my date of birth and/or year, so I also wanted to take a moment to give a shout out to my B-day homies. (Yes, you heard me right.)

  • Rembrandt van Rijn may have been born 401 years before me, but I like to think that sharing the same date of birth with one of the history’s greatest painters gives me some sort of mystical artistic power.
  • Samus Aran made her first video game debate in the NES adventure Metroid in the summer of 1987. She was gaming’s first female character to have a staring role in a major console title. She’s been blasting aliens throughout the galaxy ever since.
  • The first Legend of Zelda game made its US and Europe appearance in ‘87. Two decades later, Link is still saving Hyrule from the clutches of evil. The series has become one of Nintendo’s most beloved.
  • Robert Wadlow, the Guinness World Records tallest person in medical history, was also born on the 15th. It’s not particularly significant, but somewhat freaky and therefore worth mentioning.

Since Rembrandt and Samus don’t have Threadless accounts (that I know of), feel free to direct your STP love in my direction in honor of our shared Birthdays. Be sure to check out the new prints and other awesome new stuff going on this week which Alexandra Marie mentioned in her last post.

News and New Shirts Galore

If ever there were doubts about the direction in which Threadless is moving, the prints this week set the record straight and put restless minds at ease.

Sugar and Spice - Threadless, Best T-shirts EverMother Knows Best - Threadless, Best T-shirts EverAmazing tees all around, but the two hogboy prints take the cake this week for me. Both brilliant illustrations of wive’s tales and nursery rhymes, these are also both sure buys for me.

Ste7en’s Threadless Select stands as another Threadless victory, staying true to the week’s whimsical theme with a new twist on some old fairy tales. Brilliantly illustrated with a placement that’s divine, Parable Paranoia might just have to be added to my wardrobe as well.

The Ted Leo Loves Threadless winner is another of this week’s impressive tees, one of the few shirts that I have seen that actually looks better on the shirt than on the original submission. Definitely an interesting take on “Living With the Living”, and quite a successful tee as well.

Interesting news also comes in this week, with the announcement that the prize for a winning design has been raised to $3,000 (with $500 cash for reprints!) and the unveiling of the Alumni Club. Threadless is growing my friends, and I think for the better - which you can read more about in this blog.

Threadless has awesome cooking!

I just got back from my visit to SkinnyCorp’s awesome offices. The guys were absolutely great and spent time showing me all manner of new and exciting features soon to be unleashed upon the wild, hoisted upon the unwashed masses, say, next week. (They were flighty about giving a specific day, in case they don’t hit it and make me look insane.)

Unfortunately, they embargoed me from giving away any of the details, but I’ll say this: The developments are exciting and substantial, and change the way a few things are handled.

Tomorrow’s the Threadless meetup. Translation? Pizza and free shirts that smell… completely like… burning leaves. “Snorky ad brambish” as Hobbes would say. (They’re invidually numbered!)

I will say this about the changes. They’ll probably be a bit controversial. Some may get their panties-in-a-bunch, and I’m not even sure where I land yet on it… But I like their approach and how they’re integrating everything…  And there’s some *really* good news everyone will be happy to hear coming up, too.

That’s all I got for now. Oh, and that I know what’s coming out on Monday. Hot stuff.

Buns of Steel (Submission, Verdict: 5)

Buns of Steel - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever I can’t see myself wearing this, but it has that “laugh out loud” appeal that Threadless fans have come to know and crave.

Steel buns hilarity aside, the illustration itself is a gem. Slaterock has always had a knack for utilizing the shirt as an extra color and paying close attention to detail.

Superman’s ass has never looked so fine.

Spoiled Prints Galore

The majority of today’s prints were no surprise, due to the the window art blog spoiler, but I don’t think too many Threadless fans are left disappointed. There seems to be something for everyone, from cutesy to manly - and even an abstract print for those of us who favor the “artsy”.

This adorable Wotto print breathes new life into the much abused “I’m with stupid” cliché with a cute little clown drawn in Wotto’s unique style. Whimsical and humorous all at once, this is one of the better kid’s tees that I have seen in a while - yet great for adults at the same time.
Dead Sucker - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever
This former BioShock gem, passed over for the Loves competition but not forgotten, gets its chance to shine this week as well. I predict the guy’s sizes will sell out rather quickly.

This print, however, is probably my favorite of this week. A bit abstract and “pretty” rather than “funny”, it is quite the wearable design and a sure buy for me.

Along with a few other less (or more) remarkable prints - depending, of course, upon personal preference - a few much needed reprints, and a quite witty type tee, the Threadless offerings this week sum up to be quite a good showing. Remember to use rubberdanpants to get $3 off at checkout!

Sweet Revenge (Submission, Verdict: 5 + Would Buy)

Sweet Revenge - Threadless, Best T-shirts EverI just have one question - why has Edword not been printed?! Seriously now, folks. His halftones are uh-mahz-ing, his concepts solid, his color choices impeccable - and a perfect example of this is with his latest submission, Sweet Revenge.

This is quality artwork, people! Witty and well-executed: if this subission isn’t print-worthy, I don’t know what is. Sweet Revenge is a truly sweet design (oh yes I did just go there) which will certainly be getting a $5 from me.

Shear Terror + A Gripping Television Drama (Submission, Verdict: 5, 4)

Shear Terror - Threadless, Best T-shirts EverThe newest submission from jean_warhol is both clever and well-designed, cartoon-y without being campy. The exclamation of “OMG!” from the unshorn sheep is just too cute, adding a punchline effective enough to elicit a giggle from gazers - and I can honestly say that I have never seen a more elaborate thought bubble in my life. If printed with a slightly different placement/sizing, this is a sure buy for me - but a ‘5′ will do for now.

A Gripping Television Drama - Threadless, Best T-shirts EverWanderingBert’s newest design is likewise an impressive illustration, with clever line use and shading capturing perfectly that ethereal, static-like television quality, and an interesting concept to boot. The one fault I find is that something about the style in which the fleeing humans are drawn bothers me… but it does look wicked good on the shirt. Not something I would wear, but the artwork alone deserves a solid ‘4′.

Victorian Facade + Remake Into Her Nature (Submission, Verdict: 5 + Would Buy)

Victorian Facade - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever

This new submission from iotadial is summarized in one fabulously onomatopoetic word - whoa. The wonderful sketchiness of the design imparts the Victorian theme beautifully, coupled with spot-on color choice and precise placement - could it get any better? I think not. I’m fan of the pink in particular.

remake into her nature - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever

And it appears tommybeans is finally hitting his Threadless stride. After a string of submissions featuring the feminine face which didn’t ever hit home with the voters, his newest submission seems to be playing all of the right notes. This, my friends, is when a resub is not only allowed but encouraged - his tweaks have resulted in a fabulous and wearable design.

And I hope you all saw this spoiler. Here’s a hint: A Wotto print (finally!) and an Insomnia reprint are among the Monday releases.

New Prints, Reprints, And An Exceptional Select

My Father Was A Sailor - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever

Priscilla Wilson’s Select design, My Father Was A Sailor, is definitely the highlight of this week’s Threadless prints. Her work is always whimsical and endearing, but even more so with the added freedom offered by the Select line.

Several of the other tees this time around (I won’t name names) are significantly less impressive. At least the ultra-clever Spoilt tee and intricately illustrated BioShock Loves Threadless winner, The Leftover, have been reprinted by popular demand. Now’s your chance to snatch them up if you missed them the first go around.

It’s off to work for me… but for everyone else, enjoy browsing the rest of the latest prints. Remember to save $3 off your order by using either the RUBBERDANPANTS or FACEBOOKCOUPON coupon codes during checkout.

Hello Everyone!

Since things have been moving a bit slowly here at Loves Threadless lately, Chris has graciously decided to bring me on board as the newest member of the Loves Threadless crew.

Some of you may know me from the Blog Forum, where I am moderately active, and since I have a bit more time on my hands than the rest of the incredibly busy Loves Crew, and I faithfully (obsessively?) score every submission that comes through Threadless, hopefully I can offer you guys a few more submission/print updates than you’ve been getting as of late.

Keep an eye out for my first real update within the next few days. And for all of those eagerly awaiting the results of Chris’ latest gift card competition, he’s not leaving you hanging, I promise!
