A Crack in the Grandeur (Submission, Verdict: 5)

a crack in the grandeur - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever This is definitely the best BioShock Loves Threadless entry I’ve voted on thus far.

I’m not an Xbox or PC gamer (it’s Nintendo all the way for me) but after reading the competition details, the design seems to fit in perfectly with the theme. It also works well as a stand-alone design and still looks awesome to those, like myself, who have no prior knowledge of the game.

Running hot and cold (Submission, Verdict: 2)

Running hot and cold - Threadless, Best T-shirts EverI would never ever wear this design and I’d probably steer clear of anyone who did. I don’t find it offensive (as the discussion seems to be in the comments) but I do think it’s somewhat tasteless.

As most distasteful things go, however, it’s pretty humorous. I have to at least give the artist props for the disturbing originality of it all.

Also note that this is probably the first (and last) time I’m ever going to tag a review with the word “nipples”.

Another Week Of Tees

My Neverland - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever Don't Play With Matches - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever The Frog Piper - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever

A new batch of tees and hoodies hit the electronic shelves over at Threadless yesterday. Here’s my rather lengthy overview:

First off is Le Voyage Dans La Lune. The design is based off an iconic scene from George Melies’ 1902 black and white silent film by the same title (which in French means “A Trip to the Moon”). It’s not my style, but now that I understand the background a bit better, I find the design to be quite clever. It’s definitely a must-have for movie buffs. Check out this handy article at Wikipedia to learn more.

My Neverland is bursting with action and detail. You’ll certainly get your $15 (or $17) worth with this huge print. It has a classic Threadless-ish feel about it, too. It’s loads of fun and superbly designed.

With an average score of 3.29, the Threadless crew would have been crazy to neglect printing Don’t Play With Matches. It’s the perfect tee to wear ’round those summertime campfires. It’s also been printed on long sleeves for both guys and gals.

Knight Ride is another tee that takes a bit of prior knowledge to fully “get” the humor. For those of you not in the know, there was a a popular TV series called Knight Rider back in the 80’s starting David Hasselhoff and KITT, his artificially intelligent talking car. Once again, you can find more info at Wikipeida by heading over to this entry.

The Frog Piper, on the other hand, doesn’t take much explanation. It’s simply an adorable design with a lovely Japanese theme. It’s been printed for Kids, too.

I have to admit that Amoeba Boogie is my least personal favorite print this week. The funky bright colors look awesome on the navy tee, but the fact that the critters don’t look much like actual amoebas sort of bothers me. (I do remember a few things from Biology class!) The Kids tee is also slightly less bold due to the design not covering the entire shirt like the adult prints.

If you fancy looking like a giant playing card, then Poker Hand Values is the shirt for you. It’s a classy and well-designed tee which even non-poker players can appreciate.

Two reprints this week are finding new life on hoodies. The Communist Party and Doodle Bug look smashing on red. (Of course they’re available as tees yet again, too.) Just be warned: the hoody sizes are slightly larger than they used to be. Based on my own recent hoody experiences, I would suggest ordering a smaller size than you normally would unless you like an extra roomy fit.

That pretty much sums it all up. Now, go forth and buy!

A contest is a’coming…

It’s been forever since I’ve put up a contest (though Bree’s haiku one was pretty awesome) so I figure it’s about that time.

Let me get the details straight, and I’ll start giving away all these GCs picking up dust.

Unfortunately, there’s an extra $50 that appears to have zeroed out, and I have no idea if I used it, gave it away or perhaps Bree stole it.

Anyway, check back throughout the week and look for awesome. I think you’ll like it. :-)

Off topic: Bone marrow donors and other fun things

Habitual apologies for not having posted in awhile. Busy, etc, etc. Thanks again to Bree for keeping things afloat.

A few things: I’ve been lauding the idea of a redesign. The background here is tiring and a bit of a snooze. I’m thinking something completely nutty. We’ll see what happens.

If you think you’re someone who’d dig writing for LT, feel free to give me a holler. (Bree can’t do it all, y’know!) You get to use your STP link, and share with the world how things are according to you. If you’re interested, ping me (chris at this page dot com) and send along a sample or two of you not completely sucking at the written word.

Also, and totally unrelated: I was talking to Bree today about my recent registration with the National Marrow Donor Program as a bone marrow donor. I was inspired a few weeks ago when I saw a post on Metafilter about it, but didn’t just sit and do it. Then, I saw a particularly sad tale via Digg about a man whose sister is a match but refuses to donate to him. Absolutely charming. (You can read the full account here, but it’s a British paper and a bit of a sob story.) My thinking is along the lines of the following: If I turn out to be a match, and someone can stay alive at the cost of a rough day in the hospital and a sore hip for a week, we should be so lucky, right?

If it sounds like something you’re interested in signing up for, the system is pretty simple. You have to be over 18, and it’s not like donating blood: you’re called upon only when an incoming request for your tissue type comes in. It’s generally a donor-to-patient donation, instead of going into a “pool” or something similar. Barring any critical health problems, they’ll send you a kit with a few cheek swabs which you mail back for tissue typing. (This lets them find matches.)

I’d encourage anyone considering to please fully read through the materials before signing up. If you’re called upon to do it, and you’ve registered, I’m of the belief that it needs to happen. That is to say, don’t register if you’re not 100% willing. You’re put under general anaesthesia, and they go to town with a needle through your hip, into the bone. This really creeps me out, but I’ll be knocked out, right? You wake up with some soreness that generally goes away by the end of the week and that’s that.

You can find more information and register as a donor here. It usually costs $52 for tissue typing, but there’s an embedded promo code to make it free. Again, I’d encourage you to only register if you’re serious about donating, if you’re ever found as a match.

That’s my spiel for now. New shirts tomorrow, and I’m sure we won’t be disappointed.

Don’t Worry (Submission, Verdict: 4)

don't worry - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever This design takes the cake for being altogether funky. The world would be wise to live by its message, too.

The missing apostrophe in the word “dont” is my only major beef. I’m a stickler for that sort of thing.

Traffic Jam (Submission, Verdict: 5)

Traffic Jam - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever A food pun that’s actually amusing and well illustrated? It be so! Even the purple tee, which I would normally find repulsive, looks great for this design.

The submission only has one day left, so vote it up while you’ve still got the chance. I’m totally in the mood for jam on toast now. Mmm.

New Tees And A Childish Threadless Spin-Off Site

Mr. Toxic Waste - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever

There’s new tees aplenty over at Threadless. Yesterday they announced the Fast Food Nation Loves Threadless winners, one clever Type Tee, three superb on-going competition winners, and two lovable reprints.

Mr. Toxic Waste (check out the product page to see its super glow ink in action) is featured above. It’s definitely my favorite of the bunch… I’m madly in love with Jan Avendano’s offbeat style and boundless imagination.

Head over to the Threadless home-page to discover if any of the other five new prints will find their way into your own heart and possibly your shopping cart.

If you have children cool enough to wear Threadless, then also be sure to give the new ThreadlessKids.com a look. Kids apparel is still purchasable through Threadless’ main site, but they’ve decided to launch a separate little piece of web-space especially for the kiddos. Supposedly, more “kids-related fun and excitement” is planned for the coming weeks. Stay tuned for the latest info!

Hue of Happiness (Submission, Verdict: 5 + Would Buy)

Hue of Happiness - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever I’ve been browsing the submissions off and on today, and I finally stumbled upon one that I actually enjoy enough to mention. It’s one slick image both in style and concept.

Personally, I’m digging the green on cream version because I love its harmonious look. The pink on brown and pink on purple definitely have more funk and attitude, but somehow they don’t feel quite as appropriate. (The artist provides links to larger images of each color variation in their first comment, by the way.)

Add in the placement opinions, and you’ve got a plethora of possibilities from which to choose. Unfortunately, if the design ever makes it to print, Threadless will only pick one or two opinions. There’s always the hope of long sleeves and hoodies to add diversity, though.

Where is rex? (Submission, Verdict: 0)

Where is rex? - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever There’s really no way to gracefully describe or critique this design, so I’ll spare you.

It’s all kinds of wrong (and not in the pleasant sort of ways).

Owls are the new pandas (Submission, Verdict: 3)

Owls are the new pandas - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever All the while I had been thinking that pandas were the new owl. Silly me.

It’s rather cute, but not my thing. I could see it as a kids tee, perhaps.

New Prints, Last Day of Sale

lt_printed_9up.png
Alright. Another week, another set of new tees, and a few more hours of the Spring Broke Sale.

First the reprints: Alphabet Zoo (on royal blue)and Dark Side of the Garden (On green of course) have had enough attention to give you another chance at owning them, and at $10 you’d better buy them up today before the price goes up. Both are available in Kids tees (red for AZ, green for DSotG) and Alphabet Zoo is even avalable as a red hoodie.

A Bubbly Beginning is a cute and simple black tee that offers a bit of a different explanation for the creation of our planetary system.

For those of you who love the natural tees, Hypnotic Sound is a wonderfully musical piece depicting a dancing exotic bird.

Cyclope (on pacific blue or teal in the tees, red as a hoodie, or turquoise as a kids tee) is incredibly cute - no description could do it justice. Poor guy.

Patchwork is a big print on silver and is also avaialable in long-sleeve, a glorious bird from a distance and a patchwork quilt up close.

In Case of Fire is perhaps my favourite of the tees, printed on red as a tee, a hoodie and of course an adorable kids tee. I love the whole “look on the bright side” aspect, which was brilliantly executed.

My Playtree is also an incredibly awesome design, a kid whose world is powered by the music his playtree has been carved out to hold. It’s an excelent tribute for those of us who are still in love with vinyl, printed on light blue/baby blue and also available in kids tees.

Smoking Hot is the newest select tee on creme, printed not in distinct colours, but in a brilliant gradient from blue to red. It’s not $10 like the other tees, but if you get it today you can still snag a few bucks off.

That’s it!

The Spring Broke Sale ends at Midnight Threadless Time (which I believe to be 1am EST and 10PM PST), so hurry up and snag them before the prices go up up up.

All we’ve got one last day of $10 tees.

Life is good, no?

Splitting the Atom (Submission, Verdict: 5)

Splitting the Atom - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever I’m sorry I’m catching this design on its last voting day ’cause it’s absolutely brilliant. The cartoonish style is fitting for the oh-so-clever pun which still has me smiling.

I’m also pleased to finally see a Seed Loves Threadless competition entry using the “Science is Culture” theme so creatively without sacrificing quality art. Apparently science nerds lack major design skills. Who knew?

(Ah, I kid the nerds!)
